Nigerian gospel singer Osinachi Nwachukwu died last month. At first, the story was that she died of throat cancer. Then there was news that her mentally and physically abusive husband kicked her chest, and she passed on.
Since the news of her death, people have not relented in blaming her for staying in an abusive situation, for not alerting the information thirsty online family of her predicament. Some believe the church’s stance on divorce contributed to her staying. Most people would have never listened to her songs again had she divorced. If she divorced, she would have shattered their fragile ideal.
The question ‘Why didn’t she leave’ has been rephrased and asked in a thousand ways. Why, Why, Why.
