Is It Obscene to Stick Your Tongue out?
I observed other people in their cars and passersby looking with varying degrees of lust, disgust, wonder in their eyes as one of the three girls twists and whine, then twerk a little on a sunny Monday morning.
The girls stood in front of what looked like a house, taking pictures of each other. There were three of them, all young and carefree.
They’d stick their tongue out from side to side of their mouth and make funny faces as if they were near orgasm.
They were also dancing to the beat of the silent music only they could hear because I could hear no loud sound apart from cars hooting.
It was a sensual and provocative sight but it was barely 9 am that Monday morning. Not a time you expect a dance show, but they are young and probably undergraduate students of a university on strike. So there is plenty of idle time on their hands.
They continued sticking their tongue out, make more funny faces and also raise their blouses to show tight bum shorts. It was many seductive poses for girls that looked barely 18 years old and in broad daylight.
A Show Or Just a Day In the Life Of Some Young Girls?
I was curious to see if I was the only one following the show the girls were putting on, I looked around, and I wasn’t disappointed to see I wasn’t the only one watching the girls having fun.
I observed other people in their cars and passersby looking with varying degrees of lust, disgust, wonder in their eyes as one of the three girls twists and whine, then twerk a little on a sunny Monday morning. I could tell many found it obscene, I could also tell more people found it sexy.
It is not a scene you’ll expect on the road, and at first, I found it offensive that the adolescent women were sticking their tongue out, full of mischief, daring onlookers to judge them. Or just teaching us to mind our business, after all, no one was getting harmed. The last time I checked dancing while taking photos is not a crime, even in a country with ambiguous laws and a history of human rights violations like Nigeria.
I had the time to observe them because of the usual Lagos traffic. And whenever my eyes met with any of the girls, they’d stared right back and continued their slow whine or/tongue out. I’ll be the one to tire of the stare- battle and look away.
I still do not know what the purpose of the whole show was, its safe to say they were girls just being themselves and I should learn to mind my business
But I continued to think about them because in Lagos we are hard-wired to worry about things that do not appear normal.
It did not take me too long to check my bias and not judge or classify them in any. I think the young girls realized the amount of attention they were receiving from onlookers and determined to continue shocking or entertaining us?
Why Do People Stick Out Their Tongue
In the past, adults didn’t stick out their tongues in pictures. Extending the tongue out can have many meanings for diverse situations. Children stick their tongue out as a sign of silliness, while older people might do it to express disgust. A person may also stick their tongue out if they need to concentrate. These days people stick out their tongue to be flirty and perhaps sexual invitation.
I remember Miley Cyrus from Hannah Montana went from being a delightful little girl to the Miley that was with the tongue sticking out of her mouth. I thought it was too sexual, and also prayed not too many people will hop on the trend. Until I saw some of my friends doing the same silly tongue out on Facebook and Instagram.
On the odd occasion, I stick my tongue out in photos but you won’t find any of them on my social media, yet.
When you see people extending their tongue out (a lot), are you mortified and disgusted? Indifferent? Or oddly aroused?
